About Jesper and Steve

Jesper is a Principal security Program Manager at Amazon.com. His job revolves around many aspects of security in the online world.

Jesper was an Assistant Professor of Information Systems at Boston University prior to joining Microsoft in the new Trustworthy Computing initiative in 2001. He has been working on information security issues for the better part of 20 years, focusing originally on various strange variants of Unix and other network operating systems, switching to Windows when there was finally a Windows good enough to use in the NT 4.0 betas in 1995. Since then he has emerged as one of the worlds leading experts (together with Steve) on how to protect installations of Windows large and small.

Jesper has spent much of his professional career training and telling others how to protect their systems. He was one of the core Windows instructors at the SANS institute prior to joining Microsoft, and also founded the SANS Windows Security Digest. Now he spends most of his writing energies on books and tools, as well as on the TechNet security management columns and TechNet Magazine.

Jesper has a Ph.D. in Management Information Systems and is a Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP) and a certified Information Systems Security Architecture Professional (ISSAP).

Steve’s career at Microsoft began in 1998 in the telecommunications practice of Microsoft Consulting Services where he worked with several ISPs and ASPs to design highly-available network architectures, develop hosting platforms for various custom and off-the-shelf applications, and deploy complex multi-site VPNs. His specialization in security led him next to the security consulting practice, where he worked with many customers to conduct security assessments and risk analyses, deploy technologies for attack prevention and intrusion detection, and assist with occasional incident response efforts.

Steve is now a senior security strategist in Microsoft's Security Technology Unit. He is a frequent and popular speaker at conferences worldwide, often appearing in Asia one week and Europe the next: speaking engagements have included multiple Microsoft TechEds and other conferences, plus SANS, RSA, Black Hat, Windows and Exchange Connections, Windows IT Pro Magazine roadshows, and InfoSec US. When not evangelizing the benefits of Microsoft security technology, Steve spends time with customers to better understand the security pain they face and show how some of that pain can be eliminated.

Steve’s technical specialties include network and host security, communication protocols, network design, and information security policies and process. From childhood he has been fascinated with networking and telecommunications almost to the point of obsession; he finds the simple telephone still provides him with endless hours of exploratory joy. Steve is co-author of the forthcoming book Protect Your Windows Network from Addison-Wesley. Besides lurking in the Internet’s dark alleys and secret passages, Steve enjoys mountain biking, clubbing and raves, freely sharing his opinions about the intersection of technology and culture, and hanging with his family and friends.

Steve has a B.A. in Computer Science, and is proud to put the letters NFC behind his name: No Fine Certifications!
