Tools from the book

Tools

With the Protect Your Windows Network book we released a couple of tools. Since then Jesper wrote a new version of the Passgen tool, and we thought it would be good to release that tool here. If you want to know the philosophy behind the tool, you will still need the book though.

These tool are supplied "as-is" with no warranties express or implied. We will accept no responsibility for any damage resulting from their use, particularly since they are free. We find them helpful in our jobs though, and we hope you will too. Should you find you have an urge to pay us for them, we can probably work something out, but otherwise, these are free tools. Hope you like them.

If you have any ideas for additions or other tools, let us know. Keep in mind that Steve does not program, and Jesper is not a great GUI programmer, so unless they are simple, GUI tools are not likely to make it. Tools are also done in our spare time, when we are not working on something that actually pays the bills. Therefore, it may take some time to get them done.

  • Passgen v. 1.1 - This tool was built off some ideas from Chapter 11. It was designed to help you maintain separate administrator passwords on all machines in a network, and we added some functionality from there. This is version 1.1. The main difference between this version and the one in the book is that this one lets you configure a password longer than 127 characters. You still cannot log on interactively with it, but that is probably not required on service accounts, for instance.
  • Slipstream v. 1.0 -This is the same version of the tool as in the book. It helps you build on-disk slipstreamed operating system installations, for example, for use with RIS or ADS.
  • File Checksum Verifier - This is not something we shipped with the book, just something you can use to calculate a checksum for a file. We highly recommend using it to verify that the version of passgen that you get is the right one. The checksum for it should be 441cdc362c009ec6b2c0b2cd0b9db26901e2bc30, which you obtain by running the File Checksum Verifier using this command line:
    fciv -add passgen.exe -sha1
